The symbol expresses the spirit of the 2007 7th DPI World Assembly in Korea that recognizes new opportunities created by the CRPD and to create a new wave of changes to the lives of PWDs. The dynamic pattern of an expanding water circle as if a stone is thrown into a pond symbolizes the broad and global campaign of outreach while the pattern of merging circles represents a plaza where PWDs and friends all over the world would gather in unity. Lastly, the flying dandelion seeds symbolize the far and wide reaching significance of the 2007 7th DPI World Assembly. |
A Greeting from DPI Chairperson

More than twenty-five years ago, at our first World Assembly in Singapore, DPI’s membership came together to call the World’s attention to human rights issues as they related to people with disabilities. In Singapore we took the first step on the road towards our ultimate goal: equality, inclusion and the full enjoyment of our human rights. The recent adoption by the UN Ad Hoc Committee of the International Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (ICRPD) represents a major step on the long road to equality, and we should be very proud of this achievement! Our task now is to make this lofty language a reality in the lives of our 650 million sisters and brothers with disabilities all over the world. DPI’s 7th World Assembly will offer us all an opportunity to celebrate the great victory of the Convention. The theme chosen for the event by our Korean hosts, “Our Rights, Our Convention, But For All” is an excellent one for this meeting. This meeting will be the first truly global gathering of people with disabilities after the adoption of the convention by the UN General Assembly in 2006. DPI’s 7th World Assembly will also be a chance to think deeply and plan carefully the next steps on the road to our goal of full enjoyment of our human rights. So please plan to come and celebrate with us and to help chart the course for the next part of our journey on the road to full enjoyment of our rights. I look forward to seeing you in Korea! |
